PROJECT TA'NAMAN

A Sustainable Community Garden for Environmental Awareness and Climate Action

Project Ta’naman was founded on the idea of promoting environmental awareness and taking climate action through the establishment of a sustainable community garden. The name “Ta’naman” is derived from the Kapampangan word “tanaman” meaning “plant” in English and is structured to sound like the contraction of the Filipino phrase “tayo naman” or “us” in English, emphasizing the community’s and youth’s involvement.

Located at the Lubao Elementary School in San Nicolas 1st, Lubao Pampanga, the 500-square meter garden integrates organic and smart farming practices to achieve sustainability. Low-lying and climbing crops, along with fruit-bearing trees, are strategically grown in the area to maximize space and increase productivity and biodiversity. The garden also features a composting facility that converts organic waste, such as food and paper waste, into fertilizer.

In partnership with businesses such as Tea Account Cafe, kitchen scraps are collected and turned into fertilizer using vermiculture, further reducing waste and promoting sustainability. Incorporating smart farming technologies, such as remotely controlled drip-irrigation and a rainwater collection system, the project aims to improve productivity while reducing waste.

It also raises awareness among the youth about sustainable farming and its benefits to the environment and community. The project team works closely with the key sectors of the community, including the youth, parents and working class, local businesses, and private citizens, to make this project a success.

Project Ta’naman not only provides fresh food for the community, but also serves as a platform for educating the youth about the importance of sustainable agriculture and waste management. The students and teachers of the Lubao Elementary School play a crucial role in the growth and success of this project.

In conclusion, Project Ta’naman is a prime example of how sustainable agriculture and community involvement can contribute to environmental awareness and climate action. Through this project and its partnerships, we hope to inspire and encourage others to take part in creating a greener and more sustainable future for our planet.
